Biography

Leadership Narrative

Amb. Dr. Sima Karetnaya is a New York-based public health advocate, peace ambassador and international leadership professional whose journey bridges healthcare, community service, diplomacy and global engagement. Originally from Ukraine, she built her life and education in the United States and developed a career shaped by multicultural experience, public service and a strong commitment to human wellbeing.

Her professional and civic work has included public-health advocacy, health education, international consulting and community initiatives. During the COVID-19 crisis, she was recognised for helping distribute food, masks, hand sanitiser and hygiene products across communities in New York City. Her public profile also records roles with Global Peace Chain, the National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce on Health and the International Society of Health Education.

Over time, her work has expanded into diplomacy, peacebuilding, negotiation and women’s leadership. She has participated in international forums and conversations around women’s empowerment, civil society and global cooperation, including activities around the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. She brings to these conversations a perspective shaped not only by international engagement but also by her earlier experience in healthcare and grassroots community service.

Fluent across several languages and comfortable working across cultures, she represents a leadership philosophy centred on dialogue, relationship-building and service. Her journey—from immigrant experience and healthcare to public advocacy and international engagement—reflects the idea that meaningful leadership is ultimately measured not simply by access or recognition, but by the people and communities it helps move forward.

Amb. Dr. Sima Karetnaya’s journey is shaped by movement across worlds — from Ukraine to the United States, from healthcare to public advocacy, and from community service to international dialogue. Her story reflects a leadership style rooted in empathy, cross-cultural understanding and the belief that meaningful influence begins with service.

Born in Ukraine and later building her life in the United States, Sima Karetnaya represents a generation of leaders whose identity is shaped by more than one culture. Her early journey was not only geographical; it was deeply personal. Like many immigrants, she learned to adapt, belong and grow across unfamiliar systems while holding on to her sense of purpose. That experience became one of the foundations of her leadership — an ability to understand people across backgrounds, languages and perspectives.

Her professional path began with healthcare and public health, disciplines that placed human wellbeing at the center of her work. That grounding gave her leadership a practical and compassionate core. Rather than seeing service as an abstract idea, she experienced it in real human terms — through vulnerability, trust, care and responsibility. Over time, this healthcare perspective expanded into broader civic and community engagement, especially during moments when people needed support, connection and reliable guidance.

As her work evolved, Sima increasingly stepped into spaces focused on diplomacy, peacebuilding, negotiation and women’s leadership. What makes this evolution compelling is that it does not feel disconnected from her earlier work — it feels like a natural expansion of it. The same qualities required in public health and community service — listening, patience, empathy, clarity and trust — are also essential in dialogue across institutions, cultures and nations. Her presence in international forums reflects not only ambition, but a belief that relationships can become platforms for meaningful impact.

Today, Sima Karetnaya stands at the intersection of public health, diplomacy and global dialogue. Her story is not about occupying rooms for visibility alone; it is about creating value within them. Whether through community engagement, women’s empowerment or international conversation, she represents a leadership model that is relational rather than performative. In a world often divided by identity, ideology and distance, her journey reminds us that leadership can still be human, connective and deeply purposeful.

Interview Opening

There are some journeys that can be explained by a résumé.

And there are others that can only be understood through the worlds a person has crossed.

Countries.

Cultures.

Professions.

And sometimes… different versions of themselves.

Today’s guest began her journey in Ukraine, built her life in the United States, entered the world of healthcare and public health, and gradually expanded her work into community service, diplomacy, peacebuilding and women’s leadership.

Her journey has taken her from grassroots community engagement to international conversations around health, dialogue, negotiation and global cooperation.

But today, I don’t want to speak only about positions, titles or recognition.

I want to understand the experiences behind them.

The difficult moments.

The lessons.

The people.

And the choices that shaped her thinking.
